This day I love.......

If you’ve been following my blog for some time you will know that this year I am aiming to complete 12 Marathon/Ultra runs within the year. This is no easy achievement. One marathon along takes months to train for, and the recovery afterwards is just as important. To put the body through 12, and with some been of distances greater than a marathon is a very big ask. Whilst there is no exact formula to how many days it takes your body to recover fully from a marathon, some experts say 1 day for every mile and others 1 day for every kilometer. Therefore that’s between 26 and 42 days of rest just to recover. I am therefore asking a lot of my body and as a result need to make sure I do everything I can in both training and rest days.

There are only so many external factors I can control. I can, to some extent control my training. Of course I have ‘off days’ and days when I could do more. I can control my nutrition, although I tend to make very bad food choices and it is something I am working on. To some extent I can control my sleep too. I say to some extent because I have three small children, and my youngest rarely sleeps through the night. With this in mind I therefore need to make sure the sleep I am getting is good quality and I wake up feeling rested ready to tackle the day ahead.

Unfortunately for me this wasn’t happening. I would struggle to get to sleep at night, unable to get comfortable. Our mattress had dropped in places, causing you to roll into a groove that you became stuck in. Any sleep I did get was poor quality, and I would randomly wake up in the night as I turned over to find a new sleeping position. Let’s not mention the aches and pains every morning would bring as I desperately did my stretching and foam rolling to alleviate them. A new mattress was needed.

I searched high and low for a new mattress. Read countless reviews and watched several videos. Probably in the same way you are reading this now. Trying to weigh up what would work and what would meet my needs. As far as mattresses go I prefer one with support and a medium firmness. My search brought me to the Leesa mattress.

The Leesa mattress is a luxury mattress  with  3  foam  layers  that  adjust  to  your  body  to provide  optimum  support  and  comfort  for  each  individual. The Leesa mattress on paper seemed like it would meet my need for a mattress with support and given there is a 100-night  risk  free  trial I was keen to give the Leesa mattress a try.

First challenge was taking the old mattress off the bed. This was a lot easier said than done, but I got there in the end. The next challenge was getting Little Man off the box that the Leesa mattress was in!

He kept curling up on the box to go to sleep. This was a promising sign surely? I was now more keen than ever to get the Leesa mattress out of the box and on the bed. It was really easy to do so. I had no issues unrolling the mattress and removing the plastic outer. The Leesa mattress had come vacuum packed in the box and so was now unfolding in front of my eyes. I had lined it up wrong on the bed, as the stripes go at the bottom, so a quick move around and I left the mattress to air and unfold.

A few hours later and the Leesa mattress was ready. I had read in several reviews online about a slight odour when the Leesa mattress is first opened and used. I will admit to noticing a really slight odour, nothing unpleasant, when I first removed the plastic but leaving the Leesa mattress in the air for a good few hours and the odour had disappeared by the time I came to put the bedding on to it.

I remember the first time I sat on the Leesa mattress and my immediate thought was ‘oh, it is very soft’. I was worried it might not give me the support I needed. Then I laid down. ‘Ah’ was my next thought. I did not want to move. The Leesa mattress was providing the right amount of support in the areas I needed it. The areas I would normally suffer pain the next morning, including the base of my back. I could even feel the Leesa mattress gently supporting my calf muscles. My legs were for once rather happy with me.

The first night on the Leesa mattress was the first night in memory that I remember sleeping. I wasn’t woken up as I tried to get comfy during the night, in fact I didn’t move. I wasn’t woken up when my husband sat on the bed to get ready for work. The Leesa mattress had given me back good quality sleep and if it wasn’t for Little Man waking me then it would have been a perfect night sleep.

I was keen now to see how my recovery process would progress. I had a week before Berlin marathon using the Leesa mattress and I felt great leading up to the run, in fact I started the marathon feeling the best I have felt in a long time and had a really good run. I had no aches in my back, shoulder or neck where I used to suffer with them, and I think it is down to finally having a supported and well rested nights sleep. Then came the real test. Could I run another marathon within 7 days?

Three days after running Berlin marathon I went to club and ran a very comfortable 6 miles. I was shocked. It would appear having good quality sleep was really helping speed up my recovery times. 3 days later I ran another marathon. I ran this marathon 20 minutes faster than I ran Berlin. I hadn’t changed anything else in my training or recovery except from the mattress. My children's sleep habits haven’t changed. Yet it would appear something is making a difference. The only thing that has changed in this time is my mattress. Changing to a Leesa mattress has helped improve my quality of sleep which is helping with my running.

Leesa as a company believe in better rest for everybody, and that has certainly been the case for me. Leesa donate one mattress  to  charities  supporting  the  homeless,  as  well  as  those  seeking  refuge  from domestic  abuse  and  human  trafficking,  for  every  ten  sold.  To  date  Leesa  has  been  able to  donate  or  pledge  over  30,000  mattresses  to  charities  worldwide  including  30  charities in  the  UK. The only negative for me is that they don’t mean dogs when they say everybody. I wish they would make a Leesa dog bed because one certain J keeps sneaking upstairs to sleep on mine!

I am actually really surprised by the Leesa mattress. I have managed to run two marathons in a week and am preparing for my next at the weekend. I am actually really looking forward to Little Man sleeping through the night, as now that is the only thing stopping me from getting a good night's sleep! In the morning my gorgeous youngest daughter turns 4.

She is my partner in crime and we love our adventures together on an afternoon.

She has the biggest heart of gold of anyone I have ever known.  Nothing is too much trouble and she would do anything to make you happy.  Even giving up chocolate to her sister when she really wants it.

My youngest daughter goes to bed a threenager, and in the morning becomes a four year old!

Sweet dreams little one, I cannot wait to celebrate with you tomorrow!

This day I love the night before

Slumbersac sleeping bags are made from 100% cotton and are extremely cuddly.  I love how cuddly baby is when he is in the Slumbersac, he feels very warm and cosy.  Slumbersac are available in different tog ratings, similar to a duvet, so you can select what is best for your use.

We have a travel Slumbersac which means it can be used with a harness.  There is a special pocket on the back of the Slumbersac for the buckle to slot through and as the zips can fasten both ways the harness can then be fed through.

Baby can then travel in the pushchair and keep warm in the Slumbersac.  The top part of the zip is covered so it does not irritate babies neck.  I also like that there is room near the neck so that it is not too tight, yet it is tight enough to stop baby slipping down inside the sleeping bag.

Baby is incredibly comfortable in their Slumbersac.  It is perfect for travelling at night, as once you arrive at your destination baby can be put straight into their bed without disturbing them.

There are lots of great safety features on the Slumbersac, including poppers under the arms to prevent baby slipping underneath.  Baby also maintains a constant temperature as they cannot kick off the sleeping bag in the night, and the danger of them getting covered by a blanket is removed.  They also remain warm when feeding, so do not get that shock when placing them back into bed.

It is also possible to change baby whilst still in the Slumbersac as the zips open both ways.

Baby really loves their Slumbersac, and as we have a travel Slumbersac it is perfect for both at home and out and about too!

I am also pleased to offer a 10% discount on Slumbersac, enter this code on the website NK18.

We were sent the product for review, all words are my own opinion

There seems to be a new trend at the moment, one which is doing the rounds online but yet has many different meanings - Netflix and Chill. For those of you who would like to know more and don't have any ideas what this is, this guide will explain all about it. There are actually three different interpretations of this increasingly popular pastime.

Explanation #1

An opportunity to binge watch a whole series of a favourite TV show with your long term boyfriend or girlfriend.

Explanation #2

A sedate kind of party where you invite your friends and watch a movie together with some nibbles and drinks.  A perfect way to get to know friends, especially if  you  have just moved into student housing in Manchester

Explanation #3

A chance to ask the person you've been admiring from afar to spend some time together and get to
know them better, in other words - a cheap first date.

Ok so now you know what Netflix and Chill means, this article will help you figure out the details and give you a step by step guide to prepare for the night ahead.

Step #1 - invite your guests

Deciding who to invite will pretty much determine the rest of the night. A Netflix and Chill night is a great way to get to know new friends and find out what you have in common. Make sure they know your address, how to get there and get them to bring their PJs if they intend to stay over, have bus and train timetables available if they need to travel or organise alternative transport home for them.

If you're wanting to spend time with a new love interest, then be specific about what's going to happen. Do you actually want to spend time with them or are you expecting a little more? The phrase "Netflix and Chill" has become code for something more intimate in some parts of the world, so be upfront if all you actually want to do is watch a movie and talk.

Step #2 - organise refreshments

This may depend on how long you intend the night to last. As a bare minimum you should get some typical movie treats like popcorn and beer, nachos with dip or whatever your friends would prefer. If it's

something a little more intimate or extravagant, then arrange for pizza to be delivered and have a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge. You don't want to be spending half the time making something in the kitchen, when you were hoping to spend time with whoever you have invited, so keep it simple.

Step #3 - set the scene

If you've made some new friends since coming to University and it's the first time they are coming over, then it's important that you relax and be yourself but also make a good impression. Clean your room, put away your laundry, make sure your bed is made and ensure there's somewhere for them to sit with some snuggle blankets and throw cushions for extra comfort. Prepare the viewing area, do the usual checks like making sure the TV is plugged in, your Netflix account is working and you've got somewhere to put your snacks. Close the curtains, turn on your side lamps and light a scented candle. You're looking to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, regardless of who's coming over.

Step #4 - choose something to watch

There's nothing more annoying than nobody knowing what they want to watch and spending at least an hour debating and deciding. There are a few things you can do to help this process. If you're having friends over then give them a choice of three movies to get the evening started, or give everyone a piece of paper and a pencil and ask them to write down something they want to watch, then put all the suggestions in a box and draw one out.

If you’re spending time with someone on a one on one basis, have a few suggestions up your sleeve or pick a genre you're both into like comedy or drama and choose one together. This gives you something to talk about and is a great opportunity to find out what kind of movies you both like and whether you have compatible tastes.

Step #5 - the end of the evening

If you're having a pyjama party, it's pretty much assumed that your friends will be staying over and will probably fall asleep with Netflix still playing in the background. If this is not the case and you followed Step #1 and arranged transport for your friends, make sure they are ready to leave in good time to catch their bus or train or are ready to leave when their taxi arrives. Making sure your friends get home safely is not only very considerate and thoughtful, it also brings the evening to a natural close which may be a good thing with friends you've just met.

If you're with a date, what happens at the end of the night between two consenting adults is up to the both of you, but never feel pressured into doing anything you don't want to do. Just because "Netflix and Chill" has taken on a more intimate meaning does not mean that this should be an expectation. Make your excuses and let your date know it's time to go if you don't want the evening to progress further.

Well, there you have it. Your guide to a Netflix and Chill evening! No matter what happens, have a great time and don't forget to blow out that candle and clear away any half full glasses before heading to bed. It's always wise to be careful, safe and responsible.

Unable to attend a Bonfire night on the 5th or one at the weekend, my husband and I searched the internet to find an alternative to take the girls to.  We came across one on the 4th November and it was not too far from us.  Although neither of us had been before it sounded great and at least the girls would get to visit a bonfire night.

The event was enormous, with lots of fair ground rides to keep the children entertained, two firework displays and a bonfire.

We loved standing and watching the bonfire and it looked out onto all the fair ground rides over the park.  The event itself was free but you had to pay for any rides you wanted to go on.  We ventured over, the girls were more interested in the bonfire and fireworks.

The firework display was impressive and had a wide variety of colours and fireworks.  The girls loved them.

I certainly think we will go again next year!

This day I love Fireworks and bonfires

It is a rare opportunity when we all get to spend time out as a family.  When Roxy Lanes in Leeds got in touch and offered us a family night out I could not say no.  Roxy lanes have recently launched Roxy Juniors which is especially for kids Sunday-Friday 3pm-6pm and Saturdays 10am-3pm.  This sounded a perfect treat for my girls, and with Roxy Lanes serving food it also meant we could make an evening of it.

My eldest was incredibly excited all day.  She has already decided that for her birthday she is having a bowling party, her birthday is not until Summer, so you can tell how much she loves bowling.  My youngest has never been before but she was picking up on her sisters enthusiasm.

We arrived at Roxy Leeds in plenty of time and made our way upstairs.  The girls eagerly handed over their shoes and put on their bowling shoes.  We were ready to bowl!

Roxy Lanes has 4 bowling lanes which are staggered in rows of two.  This gave quite a nice intimate feel to bowling and I did think at one point it felt like you were in a private bowling alley in someones mansion .

The lanes were knew when the girls were bowling so automatically put the bumpers up for them and the wait time for the pins to come back seemed really quick.  This made the game flow really nicely.  The girls got so excited every time it was their turn and did not want to leave the bowling balls in anticipation of their turn.  My eldest was incredibly happy because I had given her my bowling ball from when I was little and she loved using it.

I loved watching the girls bowl, each time they would bend down to watch the ball roll down the alley almost willing it to knock over the pins.  Every time they knocked over even 1 pin they would jump up and down with excitement and happiness.  It was clear to see that they were enjoying themselves.

Bowling is thirsty work and so as our game drew to a close the girls had a drink whilst choosing their dinner.  Roxy Lanes Leeds had a dedicated kids menu which had a similar choice to the adults.

Our dinner was Pizza which was home-made and the girls enjoyed it.  It was really filling so we ended up fetching some of it home.  Neither of the girls were complaining at this and wanted to eat it on the way home!

I am looking forward to returning when Thing 3 has arrived, as the cocktail menu looked fantastic particularly the Gin Garden Tea.  I also cannot wait to take the girls again as they loved family night at Roxy Lanes.

Thanks to Roxy Lanes Leeds for a wonderful family night.

We were provided with a game of bowling and Pizza in exchange for a post.  All words are my own opinion.

My alarm is set for 5.30am.

That is 5.30am on a Sunday morning.

I am nervous, excited, scared, worried and really looking forward to the challenge.  Not sure I am going to sleep much tonight but I best try.

The girls are in bed, I have my snacks ready to be made up in the morning, the race number is pinned to the shirt and I have checked how to get to the start line!  I have a plan in place for the race, but we all know that goes out the window the second it starts.  I guess all that is left to do is get to bed and attempt some sleep.

Wish me luck!

My youngest slept for the first time last night without a nappy. This is a big milestone. She has however been dry 99% of nights for the past 2 weeks and I am hoping this continues.

Potty training at night is slightly different from the day. The thing is once the day becomes dry, the night tends to follow. At least this is what I have found with my two girls. There is something which can make it easier though and as mentioned in my potty tips post, it's having a potty near them in their room.

We have a Lumipotti in my youngest bedroom. The Lumipotti has a rather clever sensor which means as you approach the potty it lights up. The light is enough to illuminate the potty but not enough to wake up the child.

I have even taken the light unit out of the potty and used it as a night light to check on the girls in their sleep. I am hoping when she is older she will use the night light from the Lumipotti to help her find the toilet in the dark.

The base of the Lumipotti seems wider and slightly thicker than ordinary potties. This is perhaps to its advantage as the last thing you want is the potty tipping over in the night. The lip is slightly higher too meaning it has less splash and catches more in the potty. Great for night time. I have found it easy to empty and clean, although do not tip out the back or the light won't work.

LumiPotti light

I think the Lumipotti has helped my youngest with confidence at night time, she knows that if she wakes up she can easily locate her potty and she does not need to wake me up to help her.

Lumipotti in room

I guess the other thing for night time is to remember accidents will happen. I have invested in mattress protectors to ensure that when they do happen its easier to change the bed and not have to worry about the mattress.

I have noticed that the longer she has been dry at day the more often she is becoming dry at night. She does have a drink before bed, as I would rather she woke with an urgency to wee of a full bladder than not waking with a half full bladder and the possible leaking accident. Maybe this is part of the success too.

My other tip is that as soon as the child wakes up in the morning, regardless of the time or how tired you are sit them in the potty as this will encourage them to go when they wake up and therefore reduce accidents.
I guess all I can say with night time training is it does happen and often it's us parents that are afraid of the accidents and therefore have a refusal to let go of the nappy than the child themselves not been dry.

We were sent a LumiPotti to review and I felt it appropriate to include in this post.  Words and opinions are my own.

Sometimes something comes along that really makes you go wow. The lite cup did just this. I know what your thinking, how can you get excited about a cup, right? Trust me this is no ordinary cup.

Imagine the scene, it's night and you or your child have woken up thirsty for some water. You fumble around looking for the cup on your night stand and whoosh, next thing you know you have knocked the cup of water all over. You are now wide awake, or worse yet the water has woken up your child. Which results in a change of bed sheets, change of clothes and a wide awake child who is rather upset at the rude awakening. I suppose you could just not give your child a drink at the side of the bed, but then you know what will happen, a 3am wake up call, 'I need a drink'. I guess the other option is a no spill valve cup, which is great, but if like me you are trying to have your children drink from normal cups, not the best solution.

You see this is where lite cup offers a solution. First it is rather clever no spill, yet it doesn't have a valve as such and you drink from it like a normal cup

lite cup

Second there is a button on the underside which you press to give the cup a blue glow. The light is just enough so you can locate the cup in the night, but not enough to keep you awake or stop you going to sleep.

glow of cup

The lite cup can then be easily located in the dark. As it is used as a traditional cup, and not a typical child's no spill cup, it is suitable for both adults and children. It did take my eldest some convincing on how to drink from the cup, but she managed it first time.

drinking from cup

The downside well you cannot use hot drinks, put in microwave or dishwasher but it is easy to clean and I guess if the intended purpose is to use at night for a drink of water, then the microwave or hot drink is slightly irrelevant.

We have been really impressed with the lite cup, it's not often something has impressed me so much.

I was sent a Lite cup to review.  All words and opinions are my own.

Dear Cloud B

We met back at the end of March and I wanted to say Thank you.  You gave me a Twilight Buddies Bunny to review for my youngest and I never realised how much I needed it until tonight.  You see my youngest recently gave up her dummy and whilst the days are no longer a problem, the nights were getting worse.

Most nights she would settle OK, but more frequently she would wake in the night.  She would wake screaming and be very unsettled.  The screaming would last for up to 2 hours and nothing would settle her.  She was looking for that comfort she used to get from her dummy.

Her comfort she has now found in her Twilight Buddy.  Her constant buddy that is always by the side of her bed.  One she can find in the night and turn her room from darkness into magical.  Her comfort in the dark.  The stars on her ceiling acting as a welcome distraction from her thinking about sleep.  Watching them as she drifts into a peaceful sleep.  Her rabbit.  Soft and cuddly, giving her that comfort she longs for in the dark.

Thank you Cloud B, you have given my daughter that comfort she so desperately needed.  You have transformed her room into a magical and peaceful place for her to sleep.  For that I am truly grateful.

Cloud B

As Christmas draws closer my eldest daughter is becoming more and more excited.  A friend of my kindly informed me that some reindeer had taken residence in a field round the corner from our houses and I thought this would be a wonderful Christmas themed activity for us to all do together.

The girls, their Grandma and I all headed over to see the reindeer.

reindeer watching

The reindeer must have been fed a few times from the various visitors as I soon had my phone sniffed to see if it could be eaten.

reindeer nose

After watching the reindeer it was time to make sure Santa sleigh was in full working order.  The girls however were rather distracted by the reindeer and horses, and kept pointing and looking round.

To celebrate Winter Solstice I decided it would be lovely to take the girls in the evening to Enchanted.  Enchanted takes place at Cannon Hall and sees the grounds transformed into a magical winter walk.  As we arrived in the dark we could see the glowing lights in the distance.  The girls were transfixed.  We drew closer and each girl was given a map to follow.  We walked round the magical winter wonderland

enchanted

The elves seemed to be hard at work in the wood and we peeped through the key holes of the elves doors.

elf door

We walked round the path and could hear sounds of elves building toys and bells jingle, then the elves said 'shh shh some ones coming' it all went quiet.  We continued to walk and then the elves started to work again.  My eldest daughter loved it.  We spotted some reindeer hiding in the forest

reindeer lights

Then in the pitch black was a table with a blue button which said 'Push'. So we picked up my daughter who leaned over the button to push it,

push the button

The button light up the tree above us and started a bubble machine.

The girls would have loved to have stayed all night, but the wind and very cold rain meant we had to head home to get warm.  It truly was an Enchanted evening.

This day I love Enchanted.
