This day I love.......

I never intended on writing a post about the decision behind how I feed thing 3.  My personal belief is that as long as your child is fed then it really does not matter if you breast or bottle feed.  Today I was pushed over my limit of tolerance with my decision and I need to write this, to remember this point.

I don't attend baby groups as a general rule because in the past the ones I did attend were full of Mums comparing their children.  I have very little interest in this, children walk, talk and do everything else at their own pace and in their own time and I do not feel the need to compete with other Mums.  Today I broke my rule and decided to attend a group, I won't be going back.

The group was entitled 'Infant Feeding support group' what it should have been called 'Breastfeeding ONLY group'.  My baby is bottle fed.

I am happy and comfortable with this decision, it is the right decision for my family.  My girls were breastfed.  My eldest until 15 months and youngest until 9 months.  I absolutely hated breastfeeding, I felt useless, ashamed and very hormonal.  I hated feeding my kids whilst sat on a toilet because I was too embarrassed to feed them in public.  I hated the dirty looks if I did brave it.  I hated the loneliness of sitting on my own, because I was too scared to feed my kids in front of my family and I really disliked not knowing how much my girls were taking.  The first few weeks were painful, no cream helped and my milk never came in.  I never leaked and never felt 'full'.  I still to this day have the scars from where the girls bit me and caused me to bleed.  I felt like I missed out on my eldest growing up because I was the one breastfeeding her sister and could not play or give her the attention she needed.

This time was going to be different.  I offered Thing 3 the option when they were born, but they could not latch and rather than stressing and getting upset they were then bottle fed.  It actually was the best decision, well so far anyway.  It is much easier, much less painful and I still feel connected to the girls.  I am not embarrassed to feed Thing 3 and feel just as close to him as I do the girls.  The bond between me and baby is just as strong as it is with the girls.  He still roots, he still looks to me for comfort and I hold him close mimicking a breastfed baby positioning.

Today I was forced to justify this choice.  The day went like this:

Them : 'Hi, I am the infant feeding support worker, is your baby breast fed?'

Me: 'No'

Them : 'Oh, that is a shame.  What happened?'

Me : 'Nothing, we decided to bottle feed'

Them : ' Oh, well how old is baby?'

Me: '5 weeks'

Them : ' Hmmm, well it might be possible.  Hmmm, well am not sure but if you wanted to we could try to start lactating again'

Me : 'Errrrr, no its OK thanks'

Them : 'Well your baby looks very small, it really would be much better for them for you to at least try'

Me : 'No am OK thanks. Can I ask if there is a bottle feeding support group?'

Them : ' No, just this one for breast feeding but here is a leaflet for bottle feeding'

Me: 'So who do I ask for advice?'

Them : 'You could try the NHS website'

I was then asked to talk some more about why I was bottle feeding and told it was very important that only I fed baby in order to build a bond and avoid any confusion and dysfunction in later life.

My questions therefore are this, why give someone a title of 'Infant feeding support worker' if the support is only available to those who are breastfeeding? And why have an 'Infant feeding support group' if the support is only available to breastfeeding Mums?

My family and I are comfortable with our decision to bottle feed, but I know there are plenty of Mums out there who need support.  Who thanks to all this pressure feel like failures that they cannot breastfeed, when actually they should be proud of themselves for feeding their babies.  Why can't we support each other regardless of how we feed our babies?  Formula is there for a reason, but we should not judge each other based on our decisions to feed our children.

I do not judge those who choose to breastfeed, or for how long they choose to breastfeed.  Good for them if that works for them and their family.  I do not judge those who choose to bottle feed, good for them  and I do not judge those who do a combination of both.  As I said before as long as baby is fed, does it really matter?

What perhaps has shocked me most about today is the 'Infant support  worker' did not know my state of mind, never asked about support but instead pressured me and made me question my judgement as a mother.  I hate this.  She had no idea to my background.  I could have spent weeks coming to terms with wanting to breastfeed and instead having to bottle feed.  The journey someone takes to feed their child, is their journey and no one else's.  Perhaps it is worth thinking before one Mum judges another.

The Easter holidays have arrived and I am very much looking forward to getting out and about with the girls and baby.  We have lots of activities planned and my Mum has even offered to have the girls for a day out.

The girls have been trying some new products to help with our trips out over Easter. The Sneck is a travel pillow which attaches to the headrest using Velcro.  It is incredibly soft as it is filled with microbeads and it provides a great place for a child to rest their head without getting in the way of the seat belt or harness.  The girls also love the pocket so they can stash treats inside.  It is really easy and simple to use and gives the girls that extra comfort if they need it.  I can also see it to be useful on the plane when we go on holiday next year.

The Junkie has been a life saver and absolutely amazing. It has two cup holders, retractable trays, a 'tech mount' and a place to organise everything you need in the car.

The tech mount has been fantastic as it means we only need to take one tablet with us and the girls can share and watch the same film.  We fill the removable tote bag with things the girls need before a journey and then fasten the Junkie into the middle seat using the seat belt.  The Junkie really becomes useful after a journey as well as all the items the girls have used or their rubbish can be taken straight out the car.  We simply love how everything is easy to reach and kept tidy and that it contains everything the girls need for a journey.

The girls have also been trying the award winning BubbleBum.  BubbleBum is an inflatable car seat.  It takes less than 20 seconds to inflate by mouth and conforms to all EU and US regulations.  The BubbleBum has proved really useful recently as my Mum had to pick my eldest from school when I was in labour with baby.  My eldest had the BubbleBum in her school bag just in case.  It meant that should I not be able to get her from school she would be able to get in the car with my Mum or her friend and be safe.  It is designed for ages 4-11 so is ideal for my eldest.  It is perfect for those emergency situations or even for travel in taxis or abroad.

All items have been sent for review.  Words are my own opinion.

Every week the girls have swimming lessons, and due to their different abilities they are in different classes.  This means that I have to keep each girl occupied whilst their sister swims.  If I could fit in my costume, I would probably take the opportunity to be in the big pool with them, whilst the other has their lesson in the teaching pool.  As it stands though, this is not an option

Half hour may not seem like a long time, but when you are three years old and there is nothing to do, other than watch the general public swim or stare at the vending machine, you get bored very quickly.  We are not allowed to watch the lessons, as it distracts the others in the class, so we just sit and wait.
With my eldest we often take the opportunity to read a book, do school homework or practise spellings, but it is more difficult to occupy my youngest.  That is until I discovered busy bags from All about party bags.  These bags are intended to keep children busy at weddings, or events or even to be used as party or gift bags but they are great at entertaining children any where.

As my girls are very different in their tastes and what will keep them busy, I ordered two very different bags.  There are nearly 300 bags to choose from, so there is bound to be something to suit each individuals taste and every budget.

I have to admit to thinking they would make great party bags, and am tempted to order some for the girls parties.  The bags are great value, and are packed full of different items.  My youngest was incredibly pleased with her bag and it certainly kept her entertained whilst we waited for her sister.

I think the busy bags would also come in very handy on journeys, either car, train or plane.  They would be a great gift to give to a child before the journey and they could have excitement at opening the gift and then using the busy bag throughout the journey.  As you can choose your bag you could pick items suitable for the journey, or even with a theme related to the destination.

Our busy Bag has been put back into the swimming bag ready for next week.  Busy Bag from All about party bags, certainly are a great way to keep little ones entertained.

The girls were sent a bag each for the purpose of this review.  All words are my own opinion.

After completing my first park run on Saturday morning, I decided it would be a nice treat to go to the theatre. Music in the round had put on a show at the crucible in Sheffield, crazy creatures. The show sounded interesting, lots of audience participation, musical instruments and a story for both girls to follow.

Rather than driving into town we opted to take the tram. My youngest loved this. Not sure what it is about kids and trains/trams but she thought it was such a treat. She even got excited at seeing the pigeons in town, to her this was an amazing day.

The crucible is such a lovely venue, the theatre was quite intimate without feeling small. There was some lovely acoustics too. The cast came on stage and introduced us to the songs. It took a while for my daughter to warm up but she was soon participating with everyone else. My youngest needs more to look at and soon got a little fed up of watching the musicians and the moving slides on the Screen in front.

day at the theatre

My eldest really got into the stories, there were two in total. She loved the singing and the actions and it was great to see her so involved. I asked her which instrument she liked and she said the clarinet or oboe. It was a great way to introduce children to music and really lovely story. I think my youngest will get there, she just can't sit still at the moment.

music in the round

As we left my eldest started laughing, I asked her and she said because the cat hoovered his bottom. Quite clearly she enjoyed herself and loved the day spent listening to music in the theatre. It has certainly captured her imagination.

This day I love toddler, trams and theatres.

Before I tell you a little bit about the Hootle and our adventures I just wanted to give you some basic statistics:

Ease of First InstallationVery easy to install first installation within 5 minutes.
Depth, Height WidthL: 63cm W: 53cm D: 46cm
Weight7.9 KG
Testing and CertificationECE R 44/04

I was surprised at how light the Hootle is to pick up, this makes it great for transferring between cars.  The Hootle can be used rearward facing as a Group 0+ seat, which you follow the blue installation.  I did not try this as my youngest daughter is just over 15Kg.  I followed the red installation.

Installation took a minute, which had me confused as I was expecting something more complicated.  So I installed again.  Double checked and worked out that was right.  I did discover that I was unable to install on my front seat because of the shape of the seat meant that the Hootle did not sit flat on the seat and I was unable to get it secure.

There is a small conversion which needs to take place on the Hootle to make it from Group 0+ to Group 1.  This involves changing the seat padding and harness straps.  The first time I attempted this I was in a rush and confused myself.  I came home sat down with a drink and wondered why I had made it so complicated earlier.  It was actually easy to understand.

The Hootle features on of the best padding around the buckle.  It is lovely and high up meaning it goes over the tummy and stops the buckle pressing in.

The Hootle features washable covers, an easy one handed recline and of course as it is Cosatto beautiful patterns and design.

Both girls love the Hootle, they call it the Flower car seat.  I am able to use it with both girls as it is versatile enough to accommodate their weights.

The Hootle has joined us on many adventures and for both long and short car journeys.  Both girls enjoy using the Hootle.  It is very easy and simple to install, but like all car seats should be checked for compatibility in your car.  As I found out it would not fit securely on the front seat of my car due to the shape of my seats.  The Hootle is well padded and has gorgeous patterns and is comfortable for a sleep.

My eldest daughter is able to fasten the Hootle but cannot unfasten it.  This is good as it ensures it remains secure when she is in the car

We have had a lot of fun using our Hootle and sang many songs.

I remember going to the caravan at weekends and my Grandad always had a Thermos flask. I remember the plain design with the red cup, and to be honest it wasn't very inspiring and a little bit 80's. The image of Thermos has stuck with me through the years, I still think of them as the flask with the cup on top, so imagine my surprise when I saw the new designs.

The new designs are sleek, modern and I even posted a picture on Instagram with no one able to guess the brand. This goes to show the changes Thermos has gone through. I was sent two items from the new Thermos range hydration bottle and Stainless King 470ml Vacuum Insulated Travel Tumbler.

My husband is a huge tea drinker, in fact I think there is more tea in his system than blood. I knew the Stainless King 470ml Vacuum Insulated Travel Tumbler would be perfect for him. We recently visited Scotland and it was a 7 hour drive. We did get stuck in a traffic jam due to an accident. My husband made himself some tea before we set off and there was still some left when we arrived. As he isn't too fussy as to the temperature of the tea, he took a drink upon arrival. His reaction was brilliant. His face light up, it's still hot. He couldn't believe it, his tea was still hot. Yes it wasn't as hot as it was when he made it but it wasn't cold, it wasn't Luke warm, it was hot. He now takes his thermos Stainless King 470ml Vacuum Insulated Travel Tumbler everywhere he goes, and it looks stylish too.

I have been told numerous times I don't drink enough. The thing is though is I am never thirsty, if I am thirsty I drink if not i don't. However in an attempt to get healthy I am drinking more water. The Thermos hydration bottle is perfect for this. It features a handy slider to tell you how much you have drunk. And to be honest it's now become a bit of a competition. Can I drink more than I did yesterday?

I love the design of the bottle and there is no way I would guess it was Thermos. The lid has a handy clip which keeps it spill proof and it is a great size to pack in my bag. I have taken it with me running, walking and even on long journeys in the car. I no longer have an excuse for not drinking.

I was provided with both items from Thermos for review.  All opinions are my own

After a weekend of the incredible high that was Britmums live, I was feeling emotionally and physically tired on the journey home.  My journey had consisted of a two hour journey from London to Manchester, catching the last train to Leeds and then finally catching the last train out of Leeds home.  Each train journey saw me dashing between trains to catch the next with a rather heavy case.  Whilst I don't normally write posts like this I needed to put this in writing.

squashed on train

My final train journey out of Leeds was one of the most horrendous experiences of my life.  There was a cricket match on in Leeds plus it was a Saturday night, therefore my logical brain says that there should be either an increase in trains to cope with demand or a train with more than two carriages put on for the last train out.

I got on board the train, which was already full think London Underground full but then more people started getting on.  Staff on the platform kept putting more and more people on the train telling us to move down.  People piled on the train.  I was shoved into the door, completely squashed.  Every inch of that train was packed with people.  It was incredibly hot.  No one could move but more people were been shoved on.  Then the first fight broke out.  I do not know who started it, all I saw was a punch been thrown, a random arm which caught other people on the way.  People trying to move out the way with no where to go.  The ricochet of this caused more fights further down the train, tempers flew and harsh words were thrown around the train.  I just wanted to get out and get off the train.  Get home.

The train doors opened and people started to be pulled off the train.  There was no explanation, just manhandled off the train.  People began getting wound up and standing their ground.  It was then that I saw the yellow vest of the police office and my bid for freedom took over.  I got off the train.  It was then made clear by staff on the platform that we were been transferred to another train, one with four carriages.  At least it was clear to me, sober me.

The train driver got off the train, he had clearly had enough.  We were late over 20 minutes and no one on the train was listening,  It was chaos.  Once on the platform I asked one of the staff members if they could make sure police were on the train.  I'm not sure why I did.  Tempers were still high, you could feel it in the air.  Frustrated that they were late home, slightly drunk from a night out, anger that the original train wasn't adequate and confused as to the current situation.

The new train with twice as many carriages was still packed.  People still had to stand up, all the seats were taken.  This train wasn't as hot and there was slightly more room to breathe.  People were still angry and telling every police office who would listen that they saw nothing.  By this point I was just tired and just thankful that there was a police presence on this train.

I was really disappointed with how things were handled on the train.  What would have happened if there had been a medical emergency?  That train was hot, and I mean hot.  There was little room to breathe, I felt trapped.  People could have very easily been crushed, it could have turned into a disaster.  Why were people continued to be shoved onto the train? Why was the 4 carriage train not used originally or earlier?  Things should have changed sooner, it would have prevented the hot tempers.  There should have been a stop to people getting on that train and there should have been extra measures taken to meet the increase demand on public transport that evening.  For me I am just thankful I made it home in one piece.

This Day I love making it home in one piece.
