This day I love.......

My youngest daughter loves Squishy and collectable characters, she also loves to be creative. When I heard about the smooshins surprise maker kit I immediately thought it would be something she would want to try. The smooshins surprise maker kit provides over 10,000 different combinations and you can purchase additional colour pouches and moulds so the surprise maker can be used again and again.

Whilst the instructions are really clear and easy to follow I am rather grateful that the Surprise maker kit comes with a practise colour pouch. Our first 2 attempts were unsuccessful, which is why in the video the kids are wearing different clothes! On one of our attempts we did not mix the colour enough. You have 90 seconds to mix all the colour together. In another attempt we took too long to squeeze the colour into the maker, you only have 30 seconds to do so.

The maker also lights up different colours in an attempt to guide you through the process.

We were very much third time lucky.

It is really important to fully pop the colour pouch and then mix it within the allocated time, followed by squeezing the colour before it hardens. A top tip would be to make full use of the practise pouch that comes with the kit, as it really does give you an idea of what to do. We also found that the longer you leave in the mould the better the product is. We left in the maker for 4 hours and then left it in the mould overnight.

The girls talk through step by step how to make a Smooshin here

Now we know what to do and have had practise runs it is actually a lot quicker and simpler than the first time we did it. The girls really enjoy making the Smooshins and the extra surprise of not knowing what the character will be like really helps add to the magic. It is also great that additional moulds and colour pouches can be purchased so that you can continue to use the surprise maker kit once the supplied materials have been used up.

Smooshins are a really cute collectable toy, and the added mystery of not knowing what they will look like adds a whole element of fun to the creating process. My girls aged 8 and 6 really enjoyed making them and could do so with very minimal help. They are wanting to make some more so I am going to have to buy some more colour pouches for them.

The Smooshins maker was sent for review, all words are my own opinion.

Both girls love to get creative and either make things, or draw.  They love to try new things and I love to watch them use their imagination.  My eldest daughter has her SATS this year and so whilst helping her with a reading comprehension, I gave my youngest a mirror and a packet of Chalkola pens.

I simply gave her the instructions that she could do whatever she wanted on the mirror.  To which she looked rather confused.  The thrill of drawing on something that wasn't paper.  It wasn't long before she got stuck in and started getting creative.

Chalkola are liquid chalk markers.  They come in a variety of sizes and some fantastic vibrant colours.  To begin with you need to give them a little shake to get the chalk flowing, but from then on you use them just as you would a normal pen.  The Markers are best used on Non Porous Surfaces such as Chalkboards, Whiteboards, Glass, Plastic, Windows.  Porus surfaces have small holes which absorb the liquid chalk and it can be difficult to erase.  I found it best just to test a small area first to make sure.

My eldest daughter soon wanted to join in and so as soon as she had finished we set about completing her maths homework on the mirror!

After taking photos of her work to stick in her homework book, she too then got very creative and made a cat in the hat mirror!

The girls found Chalkola really easy to use.  The chalk pens were as easy to hold as a normal pen, and they loved that they could draw on a surface other than paper.  I find it a great way to keep them entertained too, as they love to draw on the patio doors!

Chalkola have offered a 15% discount code if you wish to have as much fun as us with the code 15OFFSTR and I am even pleased to offer one reader the chance to win a Pack of 21 Markers.  Giveaway ends on 6th May 2017 midnight GMT and full terms are on the widget.  Good Luck.

It really begins to feel like Christmas when you start decorating your home.  Bringing the decorations in or buying the tree, it all begins to set the tone for the festive season.  In addition new items for the home seem to bring in a new lease of life to your house and sets new goals for the year ahead.

1. Cuisine Companion from Tefal

The Cuisine companion is at the top of my wish list, and top of a must have item for the kitchen.  It cuts, prepares and cooks impressive recipes at the touch of a button - all without taking up valuable kitchen space. Every Cuisine Companion comes with a ‘1 Million Menus’ recipe book, providing inspiration for every course from ratatouille and risotto to sauces and soufflés. Thanks to its five detachable accessories, the Cuisine Companion can essentially replace up to ten traditional kitchen appliances leaving you with enough space to serve up all of your Christmas meals, and its smart control panel comes equipped with six automatic functions. This product can chop, emulsify, whip, crush, melt, beat, knead, mix, steam, slow cook and even prove dough.  It is like Santa’s little helper in your kitchen

2. Get Creative

I left the B&Q press show feeling incredibly inspired.  I would never have thought of making either decorations for the home, or as gifts.  Yet you can make some amazing things which look incredible and are fairly easy to do.  I love this sign that is created using wood and fairy lights.  Really simple but looks impressive.  The idea could be taken to make any saying you wanted and would make both a great gift for the home and as a decoration.

3. New Bedding

The sensation of climbing into your own bed with fresh, clean new bedding is amazing.  A good nights sleep ready to face Christmas morning and the very excited kids is certainly needed.  Dunelm Mill offer a gorgeous range of home furnishings set within very distinct themes, Frosted Pines, Christmas Cabins and Vintage Christmas.  New Bedding also makes a wonderful gift as it is something which lasts the whole year, and can add a new feel to a bedroom

4. Copper Kitchen range

The new copper kitchen range from Wilkinson would not only make a perfect gift but would also be perfect to cook Christmas dinner from.  The range has everything from Kettles and toasters to plates and fruit bowls.  Something for those who want to replace everything and for others who want a few key pieces.

5. Paperchase

Paperchase seem to have something for everyone this Christmas.  Everything from the traditional and glass baubles to the more modern, bright and funky and even novelty items.  There are some perfect gifts for stocking fillers, and much larger gifts.  Perfect for getting the house ready for the festive season

6. A little bit of fun

Sass & Belle add a little bit of fun into every home, they have everything from elegant copper bowls to the more modern fun slogan cushions.  Lovers of flamingos and cactus will adore their new ranges.  Perfect gifts to suit all budgets.

7. Be unique

Our home is filled with books, we simply love to read.  Our children have a huge passion for reading too and we love receiving books as gifts.  The gift of reading is one which is cherished for years to come, and perhaps one for all book or story lovers out there is a unique gift from Spineless classics.  This is when a book is no longer a book, but is still a story.  Each piece features the full story carefully written in a unique pattern in which to replicate part of the book it is from.  Featuring classics from Roald Dahl, and Beatrix Potter along with many others, there is a design for every age and every taste.  As gifts go, this is a truly unique and special gift that is perfect for any household.

8. From the heart

As the cold draws in outside candles offer warmth and comfort indoors.  They seem to set the tone for the Festive period and scented candles even more so.  Heart and Home have a wide selection of scents perfect for any home, and some dedicated to the festive season.  Perfect as a gift or as a treat for yourself!

9. For the Disney Fan

Disney, together with thousands of UK parents, has for the first time defined the traits of a modern Princess in a set of ten principles, which have recently been released to encourage young girls to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.

Disney UK commissioned parenting expert Judy Reith to analyse the characteristics of Disney Princesses including the kind and compassionate Belle (Beauty and the Beast), courageous Rapunzel (Tangled) and confident Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), before putting a long list of their inner qualities and traits to a panel of over 5,000 parents. The parents then ranked the attributes they judged most relevant and important to their 6-12 year old daughters.

Three of the UK’s leading illustrators, Kate Moross, Rose Blake and Kate Forrester, have turned the Princess Principles into posters, which are being made available for free to young girls across the country.

Whilst the poster is free to download, I think you could purchase a gorgeous frame for these posters and give them as a gift.  They have an inspiring image to them and would be great for children to give to their friends.

I have received no financial compensation or products for this gift guide.

I have decided that this school holiday we would try and make the most of events happening near to us and spend some time at home as well.  Our local library is hosting a serious of Roald Dahl inspired craft activities once a week and as we were up early this morning we decided to pop along.

Today the theme was Fantastic Mr Fox and the girls were making masks.  The girls were shown an example of a finished mask and then left to use their imagination to create their own.

The girls were really pleased with their masks and pretended to be Foxes around the library.

This day I love Fantastic Mr Fox

The 14th March is  National Children's Craft Day.  The girls and I love to be creative and do craft activities together.  Taking part in crafts is a great way for us to use our imaginations and to spend time together.

Whilst we often just use our imagination to build things sometimes it can be really great to have kit to make.  The Natural History museum have a great selection of craft kits available ready for National Children's craft day.

One of these kits is to build a butterfly mobile.  The kit contains everything you need, except scissors, and even includes a book to tell you all about the different species of butterflies.

My youngest began sticking the butterflies onto the ribbons to make the mobile

The girls were really good and shared the glue with each other.  My eldest preferred the plain butterflies and my youngest the pattern ones.

It was really easy for both girls to do, but they took their time and really enjoyed making the butterfly mobile

The kit was simple to follow and gave the girls a lot of fun to make the mobile.  We could even use the handy guide to talk about the different butterflies on our mobile.

We will be ordering another kit from the Natural History museum for National Children's Craft day, they are a lot of fun and a great way to encourage imagination and creativity in children.

Thanks to the Natural History museum for sending the kit to us in exchange for review.  All words are my own opinion

The team from Santa Maria were at Britmums Live handing out fajitas kits and challenging us to tell them how we eat fajitas at home.  We are huge fajitas fans in our house but we don't have a special secret recipe or an extra ingredient to add in for us the fun is the fajitas.

In our house fajitas mean family time.  Everything is placed in the middle of the table and we all help ourselves, even the girls.  This encourages the girls to be independent, to think about what they are eating and how much and teaches them to share.

Fajitas are also fab because we can pack them full of peppers and onions and the girls eat them!  The girls like to roll up empty wrap to pretend they are pirates who 'I spy' the fajitas mixture.  They help themselves to the mixture and create the wraps themselves.  This helps with creativity and imagination.

While most people see the fajitas as simply a dinner in our household they are fab!

Yummy Nummies are set to be the latest kids craze in 2015 and we are so please to be able to try Yummy Nummies.  The girls love baking and to be creative and Yummy Nummies seemed ideal for them.  The packaging states from 6 but my 3 and 4 year old managed to create their Yummy Nummies with minimal supervision.

Yummy Nummies Kitchen magic

Yummy Nummies are a no bake super tiny food craft.  They are not intended as a main meal or really as a snack, think of it as a treat.  They are however great for sparking imagination and creativity and you can eat your Yummy Nummies creation afterwards.  The girls certainly had fun creating Pizza and Cookie.

Yummy Nummies claim to taste just like the regular sized food, so to put it to the test I let the girls try them

My youngest wasn't too keen on the cheese on the top of the Pizza as it tasted a little like Parmesan which is something she does not like.  However the cookies disappeared very quickly!

Yummy Nummies were really simple to do Mix, Make and Enjoy, it really is that easy.  The Yummy Nummies site contains lots of handy FAQ should you need any help.  I think they would make an ideal gift for one of my daughters friends.  Yummy Nummies really do have kitchen magic.

We received the Yummy Nummies packs mentioned to review.  Words are my own personal opinion

Saturday morning I took the girls shopping.  I am looking for a new rug for our front room and had heard of a new store opening in Sheffield.  Nest.co.uk had put on an open day to mark their store opening and had lots of activities on for children.  I thought it would be nice for the girls to get creative whilst I did some shopping.

Eldest colouring

The girls got stuck in with the colouring whilst I took a good look around the store.

I found loads of lovely items for our home and even a few rugs I liked.  The girls however found a sofa that they thought was very comfy

It was really lovely that the girls had some fun activities to do whilst I could look round the store, especially when rug shopping.

This day I love getting creative.

It was cold and wet outside, my youngest didn't want to go out to play and so we spent the day playing inside.  She did however want to paint.  I love painting with the girls but on this particular occasion had to be out the door in 45 minutes to pick my eldest up from school.  I decided therefore to opt for mess free paining.

Mess free paining is lots of fun, and as the name suggests clear up is minimal.

Mess free painting requires zip lock bags and paint.  Simply pour paint into zip lock bag and seal.  I have learnt that less paint works better.  I decided to hang the bags onto the patio door as the light shone through the bags creating a nice effect but you could leave the bags on the table.

By using your finger you can create patterns, shapes and even letters.  My youngest had a lot of fun drawing patterns.  It was also a great opportunity to practise our colours.  She loved mess free painting

Glitterbelle is the latest addition to Parragon books. She is the sparkliest princess ever, well unless you count my two girls.

Glitterbelle loves creative play and all things sparkly, which is just perfect for my girls. The glitterbelle range includes activity books and even a secret diary. The activity books are aimed at creativity, with princess smoothies to make and lots of spaces to answer questions and draw pictures.

Glitterbelle is very sparkly and purple, which makes a change from the pink princess you often see. It is also lovely to see a princess encouraging creativity and messiness. This makes a welcome change and great encouragement for my girls.

Glitterbelle

There seems to be a lot in one activity book, meaning that you seem to have lots to keep you occupied rather than it be compete within an hour. The book and diary do seemed more aimed at 6 years and over, so whilst my girls (2 and 4) enjoyed the pictures they struggled a little with some of the activities.

I think the glitter belle range would make a perfect present for either a family member or a friend and certainly something for the girls in a year or two.

It has been a very wet weekend.  The rain has hardly stopped since Friday and the house is so cold we have had to put the heating on.  The girls did not sleep well last night, I think it was down to the cold and after a 4.45 am refusal to go back to sleep, today needed to be a relaxed day.

The wet weather did give us the perfect excuse to try out our shadow puppet kit.  The girls have been experimenting with shadows and noticing them more, so with it dark outside the opportunity was perfect.  I set up the theatre and a light and the girls took there seats ready for the show to start.

We had been provided a great selection of puppets to use.  We could however have made our own from black card and a wooden stick, but I like these.  They were well made and came with a rather handy stand, meaning you could line up in order the puppets as you needed them for the story.

moving the puppetthe puppet show

I made up a story that related to the stories the girls already know, in order to get them to interact.  I moved the puppets to get the shadows to be bigger and smaller and experimented with using more than one puppet at a time.  The girls loved it and sat really still listening.  It was a lot of fun to interact this way.  After, I let the girls have a go themselves and showed them what happens to shadows as you move the object closer to the light.  The girls had a good look and put on their very own show.

choosing the puppets for the show

I tried to capture the show and them experimenting with the shadows by making them bigger and smaller, my camera kept loosing focus due to the dark room, so apologies for not the best video.

My youngest became fascinated with the light and started to wonder how shadows worked.

playing with light

It was really great watching them interact with each other as well as use their imagination to make up a story.

The girls loved the puppet show and we will be doing this again on another rainy day.

Another good thing about rainy days, is that when the rain does stop [even if for a short amount of time] there are plenty of muddy puddles to explore.

Splashing in muddy puddles

This day I love Shadows and mud

Our Puppet kit was kindly sent to us from Swinton Insurance.  They have collaborated with Britain's got talent winners Attraction for their fantastic new advert.  The girls love watching this advert too and I think they are hugely talented.

The puppets and theatre were sent for review.  All words and opinions are my own.

It is perhaps no secret that the girls love messy play and to be creative.  I often save things I find like card board boxes, ribbon and buttons to help the girls with their crafty creative messy play and often visit charity shops to pick up other little bits.  I do however have a little secret shop I like to visit for my creative messy play supplies.  It perhaps is not the first place you would think of for creative messy play but it is packed full of items to aid creative messy play.

Viking supplies

Viking-Direct is my creative messy play shop.  To give you an idea of the things I have ordered from there I wanted to set up a creative messy play shopping list and hopefully give you a few ideas.

1. Mister Maker Doodle Drawers

The Mister Maker Doodle drawers is based on the Cbeebies program Mister Maker.  The drawers contain multiple bits such as googly eyes, pipe cleaners, tissue paper and wooden sticks.  All those little bits that can help make a messy play creative project.  The nice thing about the Doodle drawer is that it can be customised with stickers and it holds all the little pieces in one place.

Creative play with Mister Maker

2. Coloured Paper

Coloured paper is perfect for creativity.  Green paper can be cut to make grass for example and black paper can be used to chalk on.  Coloured paper provides the opportunity to talk about different colours and I think sometimes just makes pictures a little bit special.

3. Glue and sticky tape

Most creative projects need either glue or sticky tape.  In fact its impossible to complete most creative ideas without them.  Glue comes in a wide variety of types and it is best to choose according to the project.  I like to buy the pre cut tape as it means the girls can use tape without the need for scissors.

Creative project to make peacock

4. Chalk

I love chalk.  It has so many possibilities.  You can use it outdoors when it is sunny to draw on the floor or even the walls.  It is great to practise drawing letters, shapes and numbers and a great way to draw pictures.  It is lovely to draw games such as hop scotch and play these too.  For indoor play if you have black paper you can use this to chalk on.  Which means that you are able to chalk whatever the weather.  I find it much easier to clean up than paint.  The girls have egg shaped chalk.  It fits into an egg box which I find rather fun.  The girls like the shape as its easier to grip and doesn't snap as easily as some chalk can.

Chalk on black paperChalk outdoorsEgg Chalk

5. Sand

Sand is so much fun for messy play.  It can be used to create landscapes and just for general digging.  It is also possible to buy coloured sand which is also great for getting creative and having fun in too.  Sand is great for exploring different textures and great for the imagination.

Using sand for messy play

I would love to know what would be on your creative messy play shopping list and where do you find your supplies from?

This post is written in partnership with Viking-Direct, all words and opinions are my own.

We were recently set a challenge by Kelly's of Cornwall Ice cream to get the kid's creative in the kitchen with ice cream.  We decided to make ice cream bread.  Now before everyone says 'Ice cream bread' in a Peter Kay style, it actually is really easy to do and tastes amazing.

Ingredients :

Ice cream
Self Raising flour

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F Gas mark 4
2. Choose your flavour ice cream, this will determine the flavour of the bread.  We used vanilla.

scoop ice cream

3. Melt the ice cream

melting the ice cream

4. Measure the amount of ice cream
5. Now measure the same amount of self raising flour.  So 400ml melted ice cream = 400g flour.  Measure the melted ice cream and not frozen.
6.  Add any optional ingredients to the ice cream, for example toffee ice cream, you might want to add some toffee pieces.
7. Add the flour to the melted ice cream
8. Mix everything together to make a sticky dough.

mixing the dough

9.  We decided to make animal shapes, as the bread would be used for our animal theme birthday party.
10. Grease the tin/shapes/moulds and then place the dough into the moulds

dough into moulds

11. Place the tin/shapes/moulds into the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Ice cream bread cooling

12. Enjoy your ice cream bread [although I would leave it to cool first]

Ice cream bread

Ice cream bread tastes a little like scone.  It proved to be a huge hit with everyone at our birthday party.  My girls have even asked to make some more!  It was really quick and simple to do and got the girls involved in the kitchen.

We were sent vouchers to buy a tub of Kelly's of Cornwall Ice cream in order to take part in this project.
