This day I love.......

2019 has not been the best of years. January started with an exploding washing machine. In February I was diagnosed with Alopecia after the hairdresser noticed lots of hair patches. This ended up with some very stressful and uncertain months ahead. We experienced lots of other things breaking, some of which we still cannot afford to put right. My son didn’t get a place at the nursery, which is a short walk away and this put a lot of strain on us having to travel to another. June was the worst of all months when we unexpectedly lost J. Our hearts were broken and I don’t think we will ever fully come to terms with what happened. September we had lots of stress as we tried to rebook our holiday after Thomas Cook went under. It was a very stressful period indeed. October I fractured my ankle and am still waiting on testing to see when I can run again.

2019 also brought with it some fantastic achievements for my children. Little Man grew confident with his swimming and has finished the year waiting for a place to move up to the next stage. They have had to approve this due to his age as he shouldn’t move until he is 4 but he is competent enough to do so. My eldest daughter was selected to train for her gymnastics club so we now spend most evenings with her training. My youngest daughter has finally found her passion. She takes part in a musical drama club and watching her face lit up as she performs on stage was certainly one of my highlights this year.

With running I completed my furthest distance to date of 65 miles. Finished in 4th place at a 24hour race with my ultra hubby. Finally received my first trophy for finishing second lady in a local ultra race and surprised myself with running from Manchester to Liverpool in blazing heat! I knocked a huge chunk of time off my marathon PB and broke the 4.30 barrier. I really feel I could have run under 4 hours had my ankle have not been broken. My parkrun time was also smashed finishing the year on 25.03. I will get under 25 minutes when I get my fitness back.

My hair grew back during the last half of 2019 which I am so incredibly grateful for, although I am also on edge wondering if it will fall out again. We also welcomed 4 new additions to our house. A fish which my eldest daughter got as a birthday present. Joey the Guinea Pig who is the sweetest thing ever and very talkative. Finally our two boys A and B, our labrador puppies who next year I hope to start running with.

2019 has been a tough year and one I am glad to see the end of but I am also a little sad as it will be the last year that we had J. I have no idea what 2020 will bring, we are hoping for a low key one with as little drama as possible but with two labrador puppies running around who knows if that is likely!

My eldest daughter kindly pointed out that J is 70 in human years. I had to stop in my tracks and think, how can that little puppy I brought home be 10 already. Surely she wasn't right. I begin calculating dates and sure enough she was correct, J is in fact 70. Although if you take into account his breed he is actually 56 but still classed as a senior dog.

When I stop and think about it I have noticed a change in his behaviour. He gets tired now on a 5km run, stopping to walk more and when we come back in he goes straight to his bed to sleep. We had to reduce the distance he ran due to arthritis in his hips, and thankfully in doing so he no longer seems to be suffering any pain with this.

It did get me thinking though. I take Omega 3 supplements to help protect my joints with all the running I do, J often accompanies me with my running and given his age I should surely be giving him a supplement as well? I came across Actif pets they are are a small family business based in Kent whose goal is to provide holistic products that help dogs live a full life. They produce a flaxseed oil for dogs, it is a natural oil supplement rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and is a great alternative for dog owners who want to give their dogs Salmon or Cod Liver oil but can’t stand the fishy smell. I was sent a bottle for J to try and was keen to give it a go.

I was actually surprised that there is no smell. Which is great when you consider you pour onto the dogs food. J didn't notice any difference either and ate his food as normal. In fact there was no change in his behaviour or his 'output' which I guess is another bonus. Even 6 weeks later there has been no change to any of the previously mentioned.

The amount to give depends on the dog and is easy to follow with the instructions on the side of the bottle. Having given to J now for 6 weeks I have started to notice a shine to his coat and smoothness and as mentioned before he is no longer showing any signs of pain in his hip after a run which he was doing previously. This could however be done to the shorter distances or maybe its a combination.

Actif Pets certainly seems to be working for J, and it gives me peace of mind that I am providing a little extra to help him now he has hit those senior years!

The big day is almost here, not many more sleeps to go. Santa Paws is on his way. The house is decorated, the kids are excited for the Big man to arrive and J is a bit confused as to all the festivities. He is not to be forgotten though. My best mate needs treating this Christmas.

Santa Paws is on his way bringing with him a heap of goodies for J.

J is my training buddy and accompanies me on many of my runs, so with this in mind Santa Paws will be bringing him a few things to help this festive season.

A warm cosy jumper ready for those longer runs. Plus doesn't everyone need a festive jumper?

A flashing and reflective collar, ready for those dark nights as we train together. He needs to be seen and to be safe, plus the essential poop bags. I am a responsible owner after all.

Even a dog deserves a Christmas dinner and a treat, so some pigs in blankets should be a wonderful festive treat for J.

Last but not least, all dogs deserve a new toy for Christmas. J is no different. He loves things that squeak and removing the squeak from them, his new Darth Vader is perfect for him. Loads of squeaks for him to find but non of the fluff!

Thanks to B&M for treating J this Christmas and getting him in the festive spirit!

This post is in collaboration with B&M home stores.

The cold weather seems to be on its way.  The school routine is back in full force and the dark nights seem to be slowly creeping earlier and earlier.  Reflective gear is now a requirement for running and the girls are wrapping up in more and more layers for school.

It feels like the Summer holidays were a life time ago, yet in reality the girls have been back at school for 3 weeks.  Those new uniforms I bought at the start of term are well and truly worn, the shoes are looking less shiny and homework is once again a normal part of our weekend.  Our weekends taken up with making the most of our time together and walking the dog.

Looking back over the summer holidays we filled it with so much fun.  Weekend trips to the seaside and long road trips to Scotland and to Brighton too.  A summer full of adventure, my youngest learning to ride a bike and Little Man growing in confidence.

As we settle back into the school routine the girls have been eased in gently with some reading from Maverick.  Maverick have sent us two new titles:

Hamster Sitter Wanted - Tracy Gunaratnam and illustrated by Hannah Marks
Clumpety Bump - Phil Allcock and illustrated by Richard Watson

Hamster sitter wanted has become Little Mans book of choice recently.  I am not sure if it is the fantastic details in the illustrations or the humorous prose he likes, but either way he has a liking for this book.  I rather like the adventures Marco and Polo, clever names for 2 adventurers, get up to.  The question is can they find the perfect hamster sitter for their cousins?  Will it be a giraffe who practises Yoga? or a Sheep that knits? You will have to read the book and find out!

A book which has a character by the name of Wally Wobblebottom is certain to have both girls laughing out loud each time the book is read.  It never fails to make them giggle.  I tend not to read the story for bedtime as they do find it rather amusing.  My youngest is very similar to Clumpety Bump too, she loves to make people happy and she loves her food!  A book we can certainly relate to.

We now begin to look forward to Autumn.  The school routine well and truly in place.  Leaves will soon be lining the walk to school and the girls will soon be filling their pockets with conkers.  Whilst we certainly had a wonderful summer, it is also great to get back into a routine and hopefully I can tidy the house before half term!

The girls have seen the advert for Puppy surprise on tv several times, and it is one of their most sort after items.  They have featured on birthday and Christmas lists and recently Wave 8 launched which includes four new puppies called Eliza, Lexi, Chloe and Stacey.

We were sent a wave 5 puppy to review and I left the box by the front door for the girls to see when they came home from school.  There was a lot of screaming and shrieking and the box was immediately torn open.

Our puppy Luna had had one baby already.  As you squeezed the pup she made puppy noises, but the real surprise was to how many more puppies Luna would have.  Would there be three, four, or even five?  The girls were excited to find out.

Luna had had 3 puppies in total.  Whilst the other two did not make noises they are still as cuddly as the Mum and her first puppy.  The girls have been excellent carers helping to look after Luna and her puppies.  The puppies stay close to their Mum and have plenty of cuddles from the girls.  The girls even look after Luna by brushing her hair.

The girls absolutely love Puppy Surprise and the puppies.  I am so pleased that the reality matched their expectations after lusting after one for so long.

The Puppy Surprise was sent for review, all words are my own opinion.

My youngest daughter is obsessed with animals.  She has decided that when she is bigger she wants to take care of animals and make them better.  Her imaginative role play is often around making animals better and taking care of them.

Puppy In My Pocket is a brand my daughter is very familiar with.  She currently collects the blind bags and the Kitty In My Pocket collection.  There are currently over 100 puppies to collect, and my youngest daughter wants to collect them all.  She loves the blind bags and the surprise element of which puppy she will get.

The Puppy In My Pocket Dog Carrier combines the blind bag surprise she loves along with the ability to transport her favourite pups in the Dog Carrier.  She was incredibly excited as she pulled the pink blind bag from inside the dog carrier, and began tearing it open.

Inside she was pleasantly surprised to discover that there were 2 dogs inside the blind bag.  This was such a great surprise for my daughter, who is used to just one.  She could fit both inside the dog carrier and carry them with her.

In addition to the Dog carrier, Puppy In My Pocket have also released a Puppy In My Pocket Puppy Carrier Accessory pack.  The eight piece set comes with 2 collectible pups, one puppy carrier, bed, blanket, double dish, a treat and a collector's checklist! There are three styles available to collect - pink, purple and teal.

My youngest daughter wasted no time in introducing the 4 pups to each other.  Using the 2 from the dog carrier and the dog carrier itself her imagination went into overdrive and the pups were soon up to all sorts of mischief.

My youngest daughter soon had the pups going on holiday and on various adventures around the house.  She loved she could carry two dogs in her dog carrier and the fact she had everything she needed for her pups to go on an adventure too!

One of my very first races two years ago was the Night Run at Nostell Priory.  The night run series is hosted by National Trust and there are races up and down the country.  I regularly check the National trust page for things to do, and so when I saw the race near me I had to sign up.

The night races are great fun.  I remember that first race like it was yesterday, running through the mud in pitch black dark, laughing most of the way round and feeling so proud to have run the 8km route.  The medal was glow in the dark and J was even given one too.  I was incredibly excited for this years run.

As with the previous year J was allowed to run with me.  He gets incredibly excited whenever I put on my running shoes and I love running with him, so any race I can take him with me I do.

Getting ready to run with J

After arriving at Nostell and collecting our race number it was then a waiting game for the race to start.  The race starts at sunset and as it began to set we made our way to the start line.  J got incredibly confused during the race warm up as we walked forwards and backwards, in a 'are we going yet?' kind of way, before we knew it we were off in the dark round Nostell.

I love running night runs and watching all the lights from the hundreds of runners flashing through the dark.  Watching head torches and flashing arm bands go past you or ahead in the distance.  The faster front runners lights moving fast like a bike through the dark.  J captured some of the run with his GoPro

The course was different from the first year and in some ways much better.  The first time we got incredibly lost in some woods in the dark, but this year the course was much better sign posted and more volunteers so no one got lost.

Night run finish line

We were greeted at the end of the race by our parkrun family and awarded our glow in the dark medal.  I cannot wait for the next night run!

This day I love the night run

I am a very proud owner to two dogs, J and Spotty Dog.  They are both very different in their temperaments, personalities and each have their own quirks and traits.  J has been around since before the children.  At almost 8 years old he prefers his own space, and spends his time as my shadow.  He is in all honesty my best friend and accompanies me wherever I go.

Spotty Dog is completely different.  She is a bundle of energy, bouncing all over the place and has no idea how big she is.  A cross breed dog, she has completely different needs to J.  In her head she seems to have a bit of split personality crossing between either breed, Patter-dale terrier and Dalmatian.  She is a rescue dog from the RSPCA.  Whilst she is as mad as a box of frogs she is also one of the most loving dogs you will ever meet.

Two very different dogs, with two different requirements yet both fit our family perfectly.  Spotty Dog is like having a big bouncy toddler and she loves playing with the kids, J is much calmer and is the protector yet is my companion on my runs.  The best tip and advice I can give anyone in owning a dog is to not only understand the breed but understand the dog.  J is a Jack Russell but whilst he displays certain characteristics of the breed, he also has is own personality.

If you do decide to own a dog, borrow one from a friend first.  See how they fit into your life and your house, you may discover that the breed you thought might work for you and your family actually doesn't.  Some dogs require much more care and looking after than others.  Some need grooming regularly whilst others don't.  Some may have a longer lasting puppy phase, are you prepared for this?

Spotty Dog has fears and phobias, she is scared of water and other dogs [seriously a dog scared of dogs] as a result she requires a lot of attention and a lot of time to help her overcome these fears.  It is a very very long process for which we have tried numerous methods but each one in a loving, gentle and calm approach.

In addition Spotty Dog also has a lot of allergies, meaning we have to carefully watch her diet.  J has no allergies but if he eats certain dog foods with lots of E numbers he turns into a hyper dog [a bit like if you feed a kid sweets for every meal].  Both dogs are fed Dry dog food, this means they need to have water available during the day.  J has recently been trailing the PEDIGREE® dry food and has taken to it really well with no issues.

PEDIGREE® dry food has been scientifically designed to help protect your dog’s health, skin, coat, digestive system and immunity.  As J accompanies me running he needs to be fit and healthy to allow him to run with me over different terrains.  His skin and coat need to be healthy as there is a Little Man chasing after him too!  The PEDIGREE® dry food are of a good size making them easy for J to pick up and eat, and there is no nasty smells coming from the bowl either.  J has really enjoyed his PEDIGREE® dry food and he has not been bouncing off the walls like some other brands of dry food!

“This post is a collaboration with PEDIGREE® , but all thoughts are my own.  For additional pet care information you can read the following PEDIGREE® Reviews for tips and advice.”

After attending several Christmas in July previews this year I wanted to put together a few gift guides.  They are going to be a little different from the for him, for her and for the kids and I hope they might provide some food for thought.  I filmed the Christmas in July shows, and whilst a little long there are lots of sneak peaks at what is available for Christmas

My first gift guide is for 'Pets' !

Our dogs are very much part of our family, they have their own advent calendars at Christmas and of course a present from us.  I think therefore it is only right I start of with a gift guide devoted to pets.

1. Christmas Dinner

Our dogs love to get involved with Christmas dinner and Tesco are bringing out their very own Christmas dinner for dogs!

2. Dog biscuits

Treat your dog this Christmas to some biscuits from Biscuiteers.  Doggy biscuits are available in three flavours and with some purchases Biscuiteers donate to the dog trust, so even doggies without forever homes can have a Christmas treat

3. Christmas Jumper

Let your dog join in with the Christmas fun and buy them their very own festive jumper.  This one is available from Poundland

4. A new bed

A good nights sleep, how about a new bed for your pet this Christmas? Dobbies have a wide range including this radiator cat bed
5. Poop bag holder

Ok I cannot believe I have written the word Poop in a Christmas gift guide, but these are gorgeous poop bag holders and something I have not seen before.  It beats carrying around black bags, and there are a variety of designs available.  From Dotcomgiftshop

What are your top finds for pets this Christmas?

I have received no products and no financial compensation for this guide.

We have two dogs, J and Spotty dog but my Youngest daughter has asked for another for Christmas.  She seems to have a connection with animals, unless it is a fly she has a fear of those, and wants to be with them and near them at all times.  Her dream, so she says, is to make animals of the sea better when she is older.

Whilst not wanting to disappoint her I also cannot have another dog to look after.  Two dogs and three children I think is my current limit, but I would like to provide her with her Christmas wish.  After researching online I discovered that on Argos Christmas top gift list is a My Dream Puppy which is part of the Little Live Pets range from Character Options.  Snuggles looks perfect.

My youngest daughter can adopt Snuggles, as he has his own adoption certificate, in the same way we adopted Spotty dog.  She will love to feed him with the bottle that is included, and treat him as her very own baby.

Snuggles moves like a real dog, his tummy moves in and out as he breathes.  His eyes move and close when he gets tired and he makes real dog noises. Snuggles is also incredibly soft and cuddly.

Until it is time to make my youngest daughter Christmas wish come true I will be taking good care of Snuggles, but with just less cleaning up after him than the real dogs!

Snuggles is the perfect present for Christmas for anyone who is wanting a dog but is unable to have a real one.

The girls have a new addition to the family, TEKSTA.  Our new TEKSTA puppy features voice recognition, making him one of the most advanced robotic puppy.  The girls could not wait to get TEKSTA out of the box to play.

As with any puppy TEKSTA needs training.  The girls began with the hand gesture training, training him to sit and jump.  TEKSTA picked this up with no problems and the girls laughed every time he jumped.  TEKSTA lets you know how happy he is with his flashing multi-coloured LED eyes.  His ears move too, adding to the charm.

We progressed to playing ball, TEKSTA also likes to sniff just like a real dog and he soon got hungry.  The girls fed him his bone, which flashes whilst he is eating.  After food it was time for a sing and a dance.  TEKSTA has two built in songs to sing.

TEKSTA has sensors on the front so when you call him he comes to you, and stops without bumping into you.  This is very handy when two girls are calling him and they find it amazing he stops when he gets to them.

There are 10 voice commands and just like a real dog it took TEKSTA some time to master them.

The girls favourite command is either flip or roll over.  They love it when he performs the somersault.  Little Man has even taken a liking to the bright lights and sounds of TEKSTA.

TEKSTA is one very clever puppy and can be linked up to an app for more advanced features. The girls simply adore him and love how he acts just like a real dog!

TEKSTA was sent in exchange for a review, all words are my own opinion

My dogs are very much my fur babies. As daft as it may sound J is my best friend. He knew I was pregnant before anyone else and he always knows when I feel sad and comes to cheer me up.  J loves the kids and has always been protective of them, even when they were bumps.

I love my dogs.  They have their own personalities and traits. Spotty dog is absolutely bonkers and often gives you a look of 'I don't understand'.  She has her own ways to get your attention and in particular will sit by the food cupboard when she is hungry.

J is a loving dog. He stands by the door when he wants to be let out or if he sees a squirrel.  When he wants a walk though he stares at you longingly.

He recently has a new trick to tell me he wants a walk.  He jumps on the chair and sits by this cushion from red candy.

Walkies!

I am not sure if it is the gorgeous colours, the picture of a dog that looks like him or if he can read the writing but either way he loves walkies.

There are other dog pictures available, although I love this one as it reminds me of J, which means they make an idea gift for any dog lover.

Thanks to Red candy for sending the Walkies cushion, all words are my own opinion

For the past 30 days J and spotty dog have been taking part in a vets kitchen challenge. You may have seen our weekly updates on social media. The challenge was to see how our dogs enjoyed vets kitchen food.

To give you some background spotty dog has food allergies. We discovered this as a pup and she cannot have wheat or diary and some grains upset her tummy. As a result her food needs to be tailored for her allergies and we need to check the ingredients carefully. Certain brands of food really upset her tummy, so we need to be careful. J is a typical terrier and will eat anything, unfortunately this has resulted in a very extensive operation to his stomach where a piece of plastic ball got stuck over the valve of his stomach meaning he was constantly sick. Since then some foods irritate his stomach and he will be sick. He also does not like to eat certain foods if he finds them too hard.

Finding foods for our dogs and to suit both of them can be tricky. We were therefore incredibly excited to try vets kitchen as they promised not only hypo-allergenic but also sensitive foods sourced from all natural ingredients. Vets kitchen is developed by vets know how and they are passionate about keeping pets healthy. Combining their veterinary expertise with latest technology means they have developed a range of food, treats and supplements suitable for even the most sensitive of tummies.

Our first week on vets kitchen and J was attacked by another dog whilst not in my care. He came home covered in blood with deep teeth marks over his body. Luckily one of the bites missed his eye and none needed stitches. A trip to the vets and with medication we were told to come back in a few days to see how his wounds were healing.

On our return visit the vet was surprised at how well everything was healing, especially for a 7 year old Jack Russell. He commented on how well his teeth and coat looked and we were discharged, saying whatever we were doing was working well.

J has finished every bowl we have put down and for a fussy eater this is impressive. He has also not been sick which shows me it is gentle on his delicate tummy. Spotty dog has also done really well with her allergies and had no reactions to vet kitchen food.

Rating the food in a 5 paws rating

Digestion - 5 paws [neither dog has had any problems]
Coat quality - 5 paws [ both dogs coats look great]
Skin condition - 5 paws
Temperament - 5 paws

The dogs have loved their vet kitchen challenge. As an owner I have been impressed with not only how it has been with the dogs but also the fact the bag is easy to open and has a resealable tab. This makes storage easy. A bag lasts approximately 10 days for 2 dogs so I would guess easy lasts for 2 weeks as stated in the bag for 1 dog. I would certainly recommended vets kitchen

My youngest announced over a year a go that when she is bigger she wants to be a vet, so she can make animals feel better.  She loves animals of all shapes and sizes but she seems to really loves dogs.  Perhaps it is because she has grown up with them or her natural touch with them, but whatever it is she simply adores dogs.

Puppy in my pocket is the perfect toy for her.  The brand is well established and has been around since the 90s, but are back with the latest collectables.  I love the details that have gone into each figure and the fact they are soft to touch which I was not expecting.  There are over 100 to collect and the girls really wanted one of the ultra rare glitter pups.  They have both asked when they can have some more so I can see this becoming quite a collection.

1. Blind Packs £2.49

The blind packs contain 1 puppy and the girls get very excited when opening them.  Each pack also comes with a sheet so you can tick off your collection from one of the 4 series.  The girls are desperate to find a glitter puppy and complete their collection.  The Puppies are incredibly detailed and of really high quality.  I was amazed at how much work has gone into each one with attention to detail to represent the true dog breed.

2. Clip On Pouch £9.99

My eldest wants to attach the clip on pouch to her book bag so she can take one of the pups with her to school.  The pouches are clear so you can show off the pup inside.  I think it is great value that in each pack there are 5 puppies which make it a great way to expand your collection.  The clip on pouch would also make a great birthday present and I know it is something my youngest would love

3. Dog Park Playset £19.99

As with any puppy you want somewhere for them to play.  The Dog Park playset is perfect for adventures with your puppies.  The Dog Park Playset also includes two exclusive puppies to expand your collection further.  The park has a see saw and a tire swing which really swings. The girls have had great fun playing with the dog park playset, using their imagination to come up with stories for each of the different puppies.  The dog park playset makes for a great addition into the Puppy in my Pocket collection.

\We were sent the mentioned Puppy in my Pocket items for review, all words are my own opinion

When we first made the decision to get a dog we originally wanted a Labrador as my husband had had one as a child.  We researched the breed and decided that we simply did not have the space needed.  That was when we met J and it was love at first sight.

J is a long legged Jack Russell terrier.  He displays many of the characteristics you associate with terriers and some people perhaps do not think about.

They make fantastic guard dogs.  Their bark makes them appear bigger than they are which acts as a great deterrent,

Despite their small size they love exercise and have a lot of energy.  J is my running partner and comes with me on all my training runs.

J is incredibly loving with the girls.

They require little to no grooming and shed a minimal amount of fur.  They are easy to look after health wise, with regular worming and flea treatments, and dental care like all dogs.  J also adores water and so is really easy to bath.

As a breed they are incredibly loyal and protective towards their owners.  They like both their own space but also to be cuddled.

As they have a lot of energy they love to play games.  They are however incredibly intelligent so you do need to vary your games to keep their interest.  J loves balls and will spend hours chasing them and fetching them.  We also hide his ball around the house and garden and ask him to find it.  He also loves bubbles.

They aim to please and will work for their treats.  Training can be a little tricky though as they do have their own mind but perseverance is key.

The terrier breed naturally hunts, and they are attracted to small moving objects in particular squirrels.  They will hunt and chase them.

This instinct means they also love anything that squeaks and will aim to remove the squeak from said object as quick as possible.

J is a really loving member of the family.  He knows his own mind and is incredibly intelligent.  You can read more about the breed here

Do you have a dog and if so what are they like?

‘This post has been made possible thanks to Royal Canin, but all thoughts are my own’.
